In the framework of the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, Regions4 is delighted to present the RegionsAdapt Brief Report 2020, the result of the fifth year of work of the RegionsAdapt, a global initiative, launched by Regions4 at COP21 that inspires and supports regional governments to develop ambitious strategies, take concrete action, collaborate, and report efforts on climate adaptation.

In order to continue leading the acceleration of climate change adaptation, 28 regional governments from 15 different countries worldwide, representing 233 million people disclosed information on their climate risks and related adaptation efforts as a response to the urgent need to take action to face the climate emergency.

Among the key findings:

  • 28 regions reported on their climate risks and adaptation actions through the CDP States and Regions Platform.
  • 79% of disclosing regions have undertaken or are in process of developing a vulnerability assessment, 68% already have an adaptation plan in place.
  • Together, over 180 climate change impacts and 230 different adaptation actions were reported.
  • All regions reported to be collaborating with the local level and 85% reported being also collaborating with the national counterparts in the development of the adaptation strategies.

In addition, the report showcases inspiring actions from Basque Country, Catalonia, Centre-Nord, Jalisco, Sao Paulo, Scotland, and Quebec, in contribution to tackling the climate emergency.

Regions4 thanks and congratulates the RegionsAdapt members that participated in this year’s disclosure who, despite the great challenges faced due to the pandemic, continued to lead on climate adaptation in pursuit of a resilient future.

We invite all regional governments to follow the example of these leading regions to join our community and to further accelerate their climate ambition and action on the road to COP26 and beyond.
